Welding Procedures – From Creation to Production

Companies that do welding in the oil and gas field or in a civil application should have a specific procedure they follow when they are welding. The CWIs at IIA Field Services can help by writing/creating those procedures. We are qualified to create the procedure that specifies all the parameters that the welders must follow. This is called a WPS (Written Procedure Specification).

All the specifications of the company’s welds are included in the WPS. Then, the procedure must be qualified. A welder must perform the welding following the specifications of the WPS and a series of testing performed on this weld including tensile tests, hardness tests, and toughness testing. All of the welding specifics and testing results are combined to create the Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).

Welder Testing

Now that we have a Written Procedure (WPS) and the Procedure has been qualified (PQR), we must test the welders. Our team of CWI’s can come to you with all the required equipment to perform the testing. We verify all welders are welding within the WPS parameters and then perform testing on each weld. All welders that pass the testing will receive their Welder Qualification Test Record (WQTR) or certification papers. This ensures that all welders welding on each project know the requirements and also that they have the skillset to perform the welds.

Our team has the flexibility to test in groups of up to 20 welders down to a single welder in a day. We typically see a large group or groups at the beginning of a project and then smaller groups as additional welders are added.

Need a New Written Procedure?

There are many occasions when a company may need to update their written procedures. One situation that recently impacted a lot of companies came when Lincoln Electric, one of largest providers of welding rods, discontinued their popular E8010 70+ rod. This discontinuation disrupted procedures then in use. Many companies have been forced to write new procedures, qualify new procedures, and then test all their people to the newly qualified procedures.

In a timely manner, IIA Field Services can step in and take care of writing the new procedures to the new specifications and test the welders to qualify under the newly written procedures.
